First things first, first the route....

Spent some time, several hours in fact, mulling over the OS sheets to see how best to approach the 360. Early on I proposed that I was going to walk to and fro the actual circuit, which adds another couple of days but decided to walk home which adds a day and a half onto the route. The original route drafted out below... One of the original routes of the LN south trail takes in Dores and I wanted to head uphill early, and take in the Lochs of Ashie, and Duntelchaig. Having walked around Duntelchaig many decades ago I thought it was time to see how it, and I have changed. A wild camp at the west end of Duntelchaig will be enough for one day. The plan is then to head for Inverfaragaig and camp on the nearby vitrified fort - Dun Deardail. The image below shows the upstand of Dun Deardail, right of centre, with Loch Ness in the background. Walk around Loch Ness - why?

A couple of reasons... 1) Having attended a Visit Scotland Tourism event the fact a route existed around Loch Ness dawned on me and I thought - what a jolly good idea that would be. I have walked, cycled, motorcycled, driven in a a car around sections of this area but never strung it together. The recently (2018) finished Glendoe piece of the track means the south side of the Loch is now complete. 2) Approaching pre-retirement (shite word, but nice concept) I wanted to start becoming less of a couch potato and slowly get back into walking again whilst I still could. Also it may mean regaining some level of fitness once more. 3) Training to be a tour guide meant that a slow bimble around the Loch would open up new aspects and more detail on points of interest already aware of. 4) I had loads of equipment from previous decades of walking that were perfectly serviceable and, with some augmentation or two, I could possibly be almost ultralight.
